School Games

School_Games

The School Games is a national programme, funded by Sport England. It puts physical activity and school sport at the heart of schools, providing young people with the opportunity to learn through competitions and achieve their personal best.

The games are underpinned by six values: respect, team work, determination, self-belief, honesty and passion. These are embedded throughout all of our competitions and events and support the development of the whole child.

We are responsible for overseeing the School Games programme in South Cambs. As part of this we support schools in delivering 60 active minutes, alongside delivering a variety of exciting events and competitions to local schools. We want to ensure that all children have a positive experience of competition, regardless of their ability. We also work closely with the other SGO’s in the area as well as Living Sport to provide further county wide opportunities.

The School Games is open to all young people in Years 3-13 in any education settings to participate. The programme is funded by Sport England so is free of charge to take part.

Our events aim to provide every child with a positive experience of physical activity and competition in an environment where the young person’s motivation, competence and confidence are at the centre of the competition.

All of our events will follow a specific event theme; For All, Targeted & Competitive. These themes have been designed to ensure we provide events to benefit all young people. Please consider these themes and the intent of each event when selecting and preparing your young people to ensure they have a positive experience.

FOR ALL

These events are for everyone and are delivered in school. They focus on providing 60 active mins for every child whilst supporting their physical, social and emotional wellbeing.

TARGETED

These events target specific groups of young people who would benefit the most from having positive experiences of sport, physical activity and competition. The activities and outcomes are designed to reflect the young people’s needs and motivations.

COMPETITIVE

These events are for pupils who are ready and prepared for competition and enjoy performing and competing against others. They provide the opportunity for competition in a positive and friendly environment where the focus is on enjoyment and supporting the wider development of young people as much as the outcome of the event itself.

All of this year’s competitions and events are detailed below. Please consider the cohort of young people in your school before deciding those you are going to enter. All schools are required to book onto all competitions via the online booking system. Early booking is advised as there are limited numbers of entries for some events. All entries are confirmed in advance of the event with final details sent out at least 7 days in advance.

Spirit of the Games Values

We strive to ensure that all of our events provide a rich and positive learning experience so continue to promote and recognise the ‘Spirit of the Games’ values and would like to encourage schools to make sure their children know what these values mean and why they are important in sport, school and everyday life. More information on the Spirit of the Games values and how you can promote them in your school can be found on our website here along with Codes of Conducts for our events.

School Games Mark

The School Games Mark is an award scheme to reward and recognise school’s engagement (provision and uptake) in the School Games against a national benchmark and to celebrate keeping young people active. It aims to help schools to effectively reflect on their engagement in the School Games and to also reflect on the difference that they are making for those young people that need to be physically active the most.

Schools are able to apply for Bronze, Silver and Gold awards against a nationally recognised set of criteria. Platinum is also applicable for those schools that have previously held the award or have achieved gold for 4 consecutive years.

Schools will be able to apply for School Games Mark via their log in on the School Games Dashboard from Wednesday 01 May 2024 and the deadline for completion is Friday 26 July 2024

We can support schools with their application, please get in touch.
