Swavesey crowned South Cambs Netball Champions!
Sixteen primary schools recently competed in the South Cambs High 5 Netball Shield Finals held at Impington Village College, having initially played two divisional rounds at their local secondary school to get through to the finals. At stake was the title of South Cambs Champions 2015 and a chance to qualify for the county finals, where the top four schools on the night would go forward to represent the South Cambs district and take on the best school teams from across Cambridgeshire.
The schools were split into four pools, with each team playing all of their rivals within that group to determine whether they qualified into Division 1, 2, 3 or 4 for the next round of matches. It was the teams from Harston & Newton, Linton Heights Juniors, Swavesey & Hatton Park that won their groups and qualified into the top division.
The final matches were closely contested with a good standard of netball on display but it was the team from Swavesey Primary School that claimed the winners shield, 10 years after they last won it, with a hard fought 3-2 victory over Linton Heights Junior School who finished as runners up. Previous winners Harston & Newton finished in 3rd place whilst Hatton Park recorded their highest placed finish in 4th.
In the A Team Plate final played earlier in the week it was Milton Primary School who outplayed their rivals to claim victory with Castle Camps Primary School taking the runners up spot. Histon & Impington Junior School won the B team competition, where there was a record 19 teams taking part, in their finals event held at Impington Village College on 23rd April with Fenstanton Primary School the runners up.
The High 5’s Netball League is organised by South Cambs SSP and South Cambs District Council with Helen Stepney overseeing the three finals nights.
Partnership Manager, Claire McDonnell said, “The league has been running for 12 years now but I think this year we had more teams taking part than ever before with over 50 teams taking part in one of three finals nights.
It is a really popular event for us and there was a lovely atmosphere of friendly competition at all three finals nights. The children really enjoy the opportunity to represent their school in inter-school competition and it is nice for them all to get the chance to play in the league rounds and then experience one of the three finals nights.
We must say a big thank you to Impington Village College for hosting the finals nights and of course their sports leaders who gave up their time to help umpire all of the matches and manage the score table.”
Good luck to the four schools that will now represent South Cambs at the County Finals on 30th June at Cromwell School, Chatteris.
