Meridian Primary School dominated the South Cambs School Sport Partnership Year 3/4 mini tennis competition for the second year running; winning both the ‘Cup’ and ‘Plate’ competitions.

With an entry of 18 teams into the event which was held at Comberton Village College, the competition was split into a separate Cup and Plate competition with matches played over 12 mini courts and umpired by tennis leaders from Comberton, Impington & Cottenham Village Colleges.

In both competitions schools played each other in a round robin format before qualifying through into divisions 1 through to 6 based on their results. Qualifying into Division 1 of the ‘Cup’ Competition were the teams of 2 boys and 2 girls from Elsworth, Meridian and Burrough Green.

The team from Meridian proved unbeatable on the night though; overcoming Burrough Green 3-1 before winning all 4 singles matches in a 4-0 victory against the team from Elsworth; the school they shared the title with in 2014. This meant Meridian claimed first place and the winner’s medals ahead of Burrough Green who finished as overall runners up. Both teams now go through to the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Sainsbury’s School Games Summer Finals where they will represent South Cambs SSP in the event taking place in St Ives on Thursday 25th June.

In the ‘Plate’ Competition for schools’ B & C teams it was the mixed teams from Pendragon B and Meridian B & C that made it through the group stages to qualify for the top division. There were some closely contested games between the three teams with Pendragon B drawing both of their matches 2-2. In the end it was Merdian B that came out on top thanks to a 3-1 victory over their C team. This meant Pendragon B finished as the ‘Plate’ Runners Up.

Claire McDonnell, Partnership Manager and organiser of the event said; “It was great to see so many children getting their first taste of competitive tennis, there were some really close and exciting matches that were all played in a lovely, friendly spirit.

Well done to all of the teams and children who took part and a big thank you to all of the sports leaders who did a fantastic job of scoring the games, encouraging the children competing and generally helping the event run so smoothly.”
