South Cambs Schools are School Games Champions 2014/15!!

Winners - Impington (Netball)

Thursday 25th June saw schools from across Cambridgeshire and Peterborough compete in the Sainsbury’s School Games Level 3 Summer Festival for the 2014/15 academic year. The Games act as the county finals for school sport.

The event launched with an Opening Ceremony taken place at One Leisure St Ives Outdoor for 1,000 young people in attendance and began with a lively dance routine by Thorndown Primary School. This was followed by a welcoming speech from local Headteacher and Chair of the Local Organising Committee, Jonathan Digby. An inspiring and motivational story from Sporting Champion Lesley Owusu was between two further performances from Milton Primary School and Comberton Village College, before the Games were officially opened.

Lesley has represented Great Britain at the European, World and Commonwealth levels. As an exceptionally talented junior athlete Lesley won three English Schools Championships in the 200m, 300m and 400m, three national championships, and was a Silver medallist at the European Youth Olympics before earning a scholarship to the University of Nebraska, USA in 1997 where success continued during her intercollegiate athletics career. At senior level the star ran the second fastest time in history over 600 yards, and most recently became World Masters Indoor 400m champion in 2014; also helping team GB set a world record in the Over-35s 4x200m relay.

Following the Opening Ceremony schools dispersed to the respective venues for their events. Adapted Multi-Sports (Primary) took place at One Leisure St Ives Indoor, U15 Golf swung into action at Lakeside Lodge Golf Club in Pidley with Year 3/4 Tennis being served at Huntingdon Tennis Centre and Year 7 Boys Table Tennis in St Neots.

South Cambs Schools dominated the Year 3/4 Tennis with 3 schools finishing in the Top 4!

One Leisure St Ives Outdoor accommodated most of the Games events which included nine competitions in the seven sports of Archery, Athletics, Cricket, Football, Hockey, Netball and Rounders covering children aged from 7 to 14 years old. A new addition to the Games this year was a Change4Life Village which offered fun activities such as slalom races, crazy catch and giant jenga for those not taking part in the events.

Each venue became alive with the sound of cheering and camaraderie as each school battled it out to become champions, while representing one of the five School Sports Partnerships – Cambridge, Hunts, Peterborough, South Cambs and Witchford.

Congratulations go to South Cambs SSP who claimed the overall title for the 2014/15 academic year with half of the 16 medals won by their schools being gold ahead of Cambridge SSP who earned 22 medals in total of which 6 were gold. Hunts SSP obtained 3rd place with 3 golds, 4 silvers and 3 bronze, followed by Peterborough and Witchford SSP.

The Festival was organised by Living Sport, the County Sports Partnership, on behalf of the Local Organising Committee for Cambridgeshire and Peterborough.
