Competition & School Games

Competition is an integral element of the South Cambs School Sport Partnership and we strive to ensure that there are opportunities for all children to enjoy and compete in a range of competitive sports, with clear pathways to county events and beyond.

High quality competition and maximum participation are key for South Cambs SSP. This requires advance planning and organisation with scheduling of the annual competition calendar taking place throughout June/July so that all schools receive a programme of competitions and dates before the start of the next academic year. This enables schools to review the competitions on offer and decide which ones they would like to enter before the start of the school year. Therefore allowing them to link the competitions into their curricular and/or extra-curricular programme and ensure that the children are adequately prepared and have a thoroughly positive and enjoyable experience.

Primary Competition Dates 2017-18

Schools are required to book onto all competitions via the online booking system. Early booking is advised as there are limited numbers of entries for some events. All entries are confirmed in advance of the event with final details sent out at least 7 days in advance.

School Games

schoolgames106The School Games is a unique opportunity to motivate and inspire millions of young people across the country to take part in more competitive school sport. The School Games are supported by three Government departments – the Department for Education, the Department of Culture, Media & Sport, and the Department of Health – with funding from Sport England, through the National Lottery. The Games are designed to enable every school and child to participate in competitive sport, including meaningful opportunities for disabled youngsters.

The School Games are made up of four levels of activity:

Level 1 – sporting competition for all students in school through intra-school competition

Level 2 – individuals and teams are selected to represent their schools in local inter-school competitions organised and delivered by the South Cambs School Sports Partnership. Two teams from each competition qualify to represent South Cambs at the Level 3 School Games.

Level 3 – Cambridgeshire & Peterborough hosts two Level 3  School Games festivals each year, in the spring and in the summer. These are multi-sport events and a culmination of year-round school sport competition. Teams from each of the five SSPs in Cambridgeshire and Peterborough compete in these games.

Level 4 – the School Games finals; a national multi-sport residential event where the most talented young people in the UK are selected to compete at venues such as the Olympic Park!

School Games Mark

The School Games Mark is a Government led awards scheme launched in 2012 to reward schools for their commitment to the development of competition across their school and into the community. Schools in England are able to assess themselves across bronze, silver and gold levels of the Mark.

Further information is available via the school games dashboard, the customised content portal for all schools logged in to the website www.yourschoolgames.com

To support schools with reviewing what level of award they can apply for we have produced a simple School Games Mark Criteria & Development Tool  which clearly identifies what you need to be offering to achieve either a Gold, Silver or Bronze award and offers guidance on the criteria. We have also developed a Guide to Completing School Games Kitemark to give you some helpful tips and ideas as to how to evidence your award.
