Histon do the double!

Hisotn Juniors B

The last few weeks have seen the culmination of the annual South Cambs High 5’s Netball Leagues with 50 teams taking part in one of three finals nights and competing for the A Team Shield; A Team Plate or B Team Shield. One school Histon & Impington Juniors have dominated this year’s finals though wining both the A and B team shield competitions.

Sixteen primary schools competed in the main A Team Shield Finals held at Impington Village College, having initially played two divisional rounds at their local secondary school to qualify for the finals. At stake was the title of South Cambs Champions 2016 and a chance to qualify for the county finals, where the top four schools on the night would go forward to represent the South Cambs district and take on the best school teams from across Cambridgeshire.

The schools were split into four pools, with each team playing all of their rivals within that group to determine whether they qualified into Division 1, 2, 3 or 4 for the next round of matches. It was the teams from Coton, Histon & Impington Juniors, Fowlmere & Fenstanton that won their groups and qualified into the top division.

The final matches were closely contested with a good standard of netball on display but it was the team from Histon & Impington Juniors that claimed the winners shield with a hard fought 2-0 victory over Coton Primary School who finished as runners up. In 3rd place were Fenstanton with Fowlmere in a very respectable 4th.

This was the second title for Histon within the space of 7 days with their B Team coming out on top against a record number of 20 schools who contested the B Team Finals a week earlier. Runners Up in the B team competition were Linton Heights Juniors.

The A Team Plate final is for those teams who finish in the lower half of their local league and was established to make sure all schools get the opportunity to compete in a finals night. Following the group matches and semi-finals it was Fen Drayton and Meridian Primary Schools that made it through to the final. It was the team from Fen Drayton who took the winners shield though with some lovely netball and great team work earning them victory.
The High 5’s Netball League is organised by South Cambs SSP and South Cambs District Council with Helen Stepney overseeing the three finals nights.

Partnership Manager, Claire McDonnell said, “Our annual High 5 Netball League is our most popular competition of the year with a total of 50 teams competing in the finals nights which are spread over three evenings.

The children really enjoy the opportunity to represent their school in inter-school competition and it is nice for them to get the chance to play in the league rounds before experiencing one of the finals nights which are played in a friendly yet competitive spirit. There is a nice atmosphere and a sense of occasion as parents gather to cheer on their children.

I must say a big thank you to Impington and Comberton Village Colleges for hosting the finals nights and of course their sports leaders who gave up their time to help umpire all of the matches and manage the score table.”

Good luck to the four schools that will now represent South Cambs at the County Finals at Cromwell School, Chatteris on 7th July.
