Inspired by the success of the Lionesses this summer girls’ football has seen a real growth in popularity in secondary schools this autumn term with more girls than ever attending weekly extracurricular clubs.

To meet the demand for more opportunities for girls to play football in schools the South Cambs SSP recently organised a Year 7 & 8 #LetGirlsPlay football event which was hosted at Melbourn Village College and involved teams from Cambourne, Comberton and Bassingbourn as well as the host school

The event was aimed at girls new to football or those who perhaps don’t normally get the chance to play in the school team. The focus was on providing the girls with lots of game play in a fun, friendly and relaxed environment against teams of a similar standard and hopefully inspiring them to continue playing the sport in the future.

The next event will take place at Cambourne Village College on 8th March.

Claire McDonnell said, “Football is our national sport and we want to make sure girls have the same opportunities to play football that boys do. We want them to play in the curriculum, at breaktime, after school, at local clubs -wherever, whenever they want to play, with no barriers or stereotypes. We are working with schools, clubs and community providers to drive this change locally.”

South Cambs School Sport Partnership is part of a nationwide scheme that aims to mainstream football in school for girls with the vision to ensure every girl has equal access to football in school by 2024.
