Tennis finalists decided in competitive showdown
The top four primary schools from South Cambs came together for the SSP Year 3/4 Tennis Finals night on Monday 11th June at Comberton Village College.
The teams of two boys and two girls from Swavesey, Jeavons Wood, Linton Heights & Harston & Newton made it to the finals as the top teams from the qualification rounds played before half term. All four teams had done extremely well to make it to the finals in a competition involving over 30 teams.
As defending county champions Harston & Newton went into the competition as favourites alongside Swavesey who were also county finalists last year. Jeavons Wood had qualified for the finals for the first time.
The finals were played in a round robin format with each team playing the other three in timed singles matches. As expected the matches were extremely competitive with a great standard of tennis on display and some really close scores.
The final round of matches were tense with Swavesey needing a win against Harston & Newton to retain the winners shield from last year. In the end it was a 2-2 draw which meant Harston & Newton finished on 8 wins compared to Swavesey 7. This earnt Harston & Newton the winners shield and the title of SSP Champions.
Linton finished in 3rd with 5 wins and Jeavons Wood 4th with 4 wins.
So for the second year running the teams from Harston & Newton and Swavesey will go forward to represent South Cambs SSP at the Cambridgeshire & Peterborough County School Games Summer Festival on 28th June in St Ives, we wish them the best of luck.
