South Cambs Schools Sweep to Success at Summer School Games Finals
Thursday 29th June saw 64 schools from across Cambridgeshire and Peterborough compete in the School Games Level 3 Summer Festival for 2016/17. An exciting competition ensued as children aged 7 to 16 battled it out to become county champions.
The Opening Ceremony took place at One Leisure St Ives Outdoor Centre, led by four Young Leaders from Swavesey Village College, and was a bright and colourful affair with musical performances from Comberton Village College and Jayne Thacker from Living Sport. We were fortunate enough to have Team GB’s Modern Pentathlon Silver Medalist Heather Fell as our Sporting Champion on the day. Heather shared her experiences and encouraged those taking part throughout the day.
Following the Opening Ceremony schools dispersed to the respective venues of their events. Adapted Multi-Sports PLUS took place at One Leisure St Ives Indoor, Mini-Red Tennis was held at Huntingdon Tennis Club and the Supersixes Golf competition took place at Lakeside Lodge Golf Club, Pidley. The host venue One Leisure St Ives Outdoor saw a number of competitions and activities take place, including; Quadkids Athletics, Quicksticks Hockey, Rounders, Netball, Cricket PLUS, Inclusive Archery, a Handball Taster and a Change 4 Life Village.
Each venue came alive with the sound of cheering and camaraderie as the schools battled it out to become champions. Each school represented one of the five School Sports Partnerships – Cambridge (CSSP), Hunts (HSSP), Peterborough, South Cambs (SCSSP) and Witchford (WSSP).
The South Cambs Schools once again dominated the Tennis finals with both Harston and Newton and Swavesey qualifying for the title match which saw Harston and Newton come through victorious, reversing the result from the partnership finals. We also had success in both of the Quadkids Athletics competitions , Histon and Impington and Steeple Morden finished in the top 2 spots for the big schools and Coton won the small schools competition. A representative team from the South Cambs Partnership schools finished 3rd in the Adapted Multi-Sport Plus competition. Granta School managed to go one better than last year and win the Cricket Plus competition this year. Each team that takes part in this event, regardless of the results, should feel very proud at having qualified for this level 3 competition and we hope each competitor enjoyed the experience.
The Festival was organised by Living Sport, the County Sports Partnership, on behalf of the Local Organising Committee for Cambridgeshire and Peterborough. The aim of the Games is to create a positive and rewarding sporting experience for all involved.
