Newcomers win Year 3/4 Gymnastics Competition
Teams of year 3 & 4 gymnasts from ten South Cambs primary schools took part in the School Sports Partnerships Key Steps Gymnastics Competition on Wednesday 11th February at Comberton Village College.
The mood was quietly focused whilst the children demonstrated their skills on the vault and floor in front of the judges and on looking spectators. At stake was the chance to represent South Cambs SSP at the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough School Games Spring Festival, with the top two schools qualifying to take on the best schools from across the County.
After a welcome and warm up led by coaches from High Flyers Gymnastics Club, which runs out of Comberton Sports Centre, the competition started.
The mixed teams of six children from Barton, Bassingbourn, Coton, Dry Drayton, Gamlingay, Harston & Newton, Haslingfield, Hatton Park, Linton Heights, & Thriplow schools all had to perform a vault and then either a floor or body management routine with each performance judged and given a score out of 10. Each child’s individual score in both disciplines was then combined to give an overall team score out of a maximum of 120.
The competition was fiercely contested and after all of the scores were added up less than 10 points separated the top 8 teams. It was the children from Coton Primary School, who were competing in the competition for the first time that out performed all of the others to take the winners crown. The teams below them couldn’t be separated on points though which meant last year’s winners Haslingfield Primary School & Gamlingay First School finished as joint runners up. All three teams will now go forward to represent South Cambs at the Cambridgeshire & Peterborough School Games Finals on Thursday 19th March.
The top 3 scoring individuals were also awarded with medals with first place going to Starr Harrison from Bassingbourn Primary whilst her twin sister Lily came 3rd. In 2nd place was Lucia Clarke from Haslingfield Primary.
Claire McDonnell, South Cambs School Games Organiser said, “Well done to all the teams and children that took part and a big thank you to our judges and sports leaders. We were really pleased with the success of the competition and it was nice to see some new schools taking part for the first time.”
