A Celebration of sporting achievements and accomplishments by the regions school age under 17’s. The Cambridge News has launched the first Junior Sports Awards in celebration of the outstanding talent and dedication among teams, individuals and clubs across Mid-Anglia.

Youth sport is thriving in our region and these awards aim to pay tribute to to athletes, coaches, volunteers and leaders who help make this success possible.

The awards feature eight categories, nominations are invited for each one, from which a short list for each will be drawn up.

A panel of judges will then cast their eye over those nominations, with the winners announced at a special ceremony this summer.

Paul Brackley, the editor of the News, said: “Sport plays an important role in the development of so many youngsters, teaching them key skills in areas such as teamwork that they can then carry into adulthood.

“We felt that it was important to recognise the success and achievements of youngsters across the region, and give them an occasion to take the spotlight.

“Sports awards so often centre on those who have already reached the top of the tree – and rightly so – but we feel it is important to be able to encourage those making their way in many disciplines and spur them on to reach their goals.

“We have followed the likes of Charlotte Edwards, Louis Smith and Goldie Sayers through their junior sporting careers to now be among the best in the world in their chosen sports.

“And we hope that those who will be nominated and short-listed for these awards will follow in those illustrious footsteps.

“So we are really proud and delighted to be able to recognise the achievements of youngsters in the region by launching the Cambridge News Junior Sports Awards, and hope it will celebrate the brilliance of sport.”

South Cambs SSP is pleased to support these awards and would encourage schools, teachers, young people and parents to nominate who they feel should receive one of the awards listed below, by completing the form from the Cambridge News website.
