Haslingfield tennis aces!
Haslingfield Primary School dominated the South Cambs School Sport Partnership Year 3/4 mini tennis competition for the second year running; winning the ‘Cup’ competition and finishing as runners up in the ‘Plate’.
With an entry of 18 teams into the event which was held at Comberton Village College, the competition was split into a separate Cup and Plate competition with matches played over 12 mini courts and umpired by tennis leaders from Comberton Village College.
In both competitions schools played each other in a round robin format before qualifying through into divisions 1 through to 6 based on their results. Qualifying into Division 1 of the ‘Cup’ Competition were the teams of 2 boys and 2 girls from Linton Heights, Haslingfield and Burrough Green.
The teams from Haslingfield and Linton Heights both had victories over Burrough Green which meant the title went down to their final match against each other with Linton Heights needing a win to guarantee overall victory. It was incredibly close but a 2-2 draw in singles matches ensured Haslingfield claimed the winner’s title by 6 games to 5. Linton Heights finished as runners up ahead of Burrough Green in third.
Haslingfield and Linton Heights now go through to the SSP Finals where they will take on the top 2 teams from the competition held at Melbourn Village College on Tuesday 24th May, to determine the overall SSP Year 3/4 Mini Red Tennis Champions for 2016. The top two teams from the SSP Finals will then qualify to represent South Cambs SSP at the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Sainsbury’s School Games Summer Finals on Thursday 30th June in St Ives.
In the ‘Plate’ Competition for schools’ B & C teams it was the mixed teams from Haslingfied B and Swavesey B & C that made it through the group stages to qualify for the top division. The Swavesey B team proved unbeatable on the night though; overcoming Haslingfield B 3-1 before winning all 4 singles matches in a 4-0 victory against the their C team to claim the tile title of ’Plate’ winners. Haslingfield B finished as ‘Plate’ Runners Up.
New for this year’s competition was a special ‘Spirit of the Games’ award which has been introduced to support the work being done in schools to encourage children to think about the lessons that can be learned through sport and the importance of values such as respect, determination, teamwork, honesty, passion and self-belief; not only in sport but everyday life. The ‘Spirit of the Games’ award therefore recognises those individuals that have shown good sportsmanship and best demonstrated these sporting values and was judged by the sports leaders.

Claire McDonnell, Partnership Manager and organiser of the event said; “It was great to see so many children getting their first taste of competitive tennis, there were some really close and exciting matches that were all played in a lovely, friendly spirit.
