The fantastic facilities at Cambridge University Sports Ground on Wilberforce Road played host to the annual South Cambs SSP Year 5/6 Quadkids Athletics Competition on 9th June with a record 22 teams competing in the event. It was a beautiful afternoon for which saw two competitions running side by side again this year, one for ‘Small Schools’ open to schools with fewer than 120 pupils in Key Stage 2 and one for ‘Big Schools’ open to schools with more than 120 pupils in Key Stage 2. Teams were not only competing for the title of ‘South Cambs Champions 2016’ but also the honour of representing the partnership at the County School Games Finals later in the month in St Ives.

Quadkids is a team based competition with 5 boys and 5 girls each competing in a 75m sprint, a 600m run, a long jump and vortex howler throw. Individual performances are scored using a points table and the winners are the team with the highest cumulative points score.

The ‘Big Schools’ team competition was closely contested between the top three schools who were jostling for positions after each round of events. The eventual winners were reigning champions Histon & Impington Juniors who finished ahead of runners up Swavesey Primary School; both teams now qualify for the County School Games Summer Festival on 30th June in St Ives. In 3rd place was last years runners up Steeple Morden Primary School.

In the ‘Small Schools’ competition the team from Coton Primary A team finished as clear winners but the positions below them were much more closely contested with only 4 points separating the teams finishing in 2nd and 3rd  position with Meldreth coming 2nd and Harston and Newton coming 3rd. This sees Coton A team and Meldreth off to the County School Games.

There were also some great individual performances on the night with the top 3 boys being Ethan Rice from Fenstanton coming 1st with 249 points, followed by Max Lyemere from Swavesey with 245 points closely followed by Archie Holt from Steeple Morden with 244 points. The top 3 girls weren’t quite so close. They were Emilie Simpson from Histon and Impington Junior School with 242 points followed by Liberty Ashdown with 237 points followed by Sasha Osbourne from Coton A team with 216 points.

New for this year’s competition was a special ‘Spirit of the Games’ award which has been introduced to support the work being done in schools to encourage children to think about the lessons that can be learned through sport and the importance of values such as respect, determination, teamwork, honesty, passion and self-belief; not only in sport but everyday life. The ‘Spirit of the Games’ award therefore recognises those individuals that have shown good sportsmanship and best demonstrated these sporting values and was judged by the sports leaders.

Spirit of the Games Award winners were:

Cosmo Cormori Woodcock – Coton
Emerson Gilbertson – Coton
Sophia Hall – Coton
Jack Stevens – Jeavons Wood
Alex Selmes – Jeavons Wood
Benjamin Thompson – Elsworth
Lola Brown – Meldreth
Mark Lightfoot – Meridian

The event was supported by leaders from our Leadership Academy. They came from all over South Cambs to help out, we had a groups of leaders from Swavesey Village College, Melbourn Village College, Comberton Village College and Linton Village College. Our leaders were fantastic and helped all 220 children get to every event, get them scored and timed. Many of the staff and parents that came to the event told us how wonderful they had been.

Claire McDonnell, Partnership Manager said “It was a great event and fantastic for the children to get to compete at the athletics track and use such lovely facilities, I hope it will have inspired some of them to get more involved in athletics. There were some excellent performances on the day so congratulations to all of our winners and well done to everyone who took part. As always we have to thank the amazing sports leaders from Comberton, Swavesey, Melbourn and Linton Village Colleges who organised and scored the events for us, they did a great job and the staff and parents were full of praise for them. ”
