Quadkids Final Results

The fantastic facilities at Cambridge University Sports Ground on Wilberforce Road played host to the annual South Cambs SSP Year 5/6 Quadkids Athletics Competition on 8th June with a record 24 teams competing in the event. We were lucky with the weather and the rain held off for the afternoon for which saw two competitions running side by side again this year, one for ‘Small Schools’ open to schools with fewer than 120 pupils in Key Stage 2 and one for ‘Big Schools’ open to schools with more than 120 pupils in Key Stage 2. Teams were not only competing for the title of ‘South Cambs Champions 2017’ but also the honour of representing the partnership at the County School Games Finals later in the month in St Ives.

Quadkids is a team based competition with 5 boys and 5 girls each competing in a 75m sprint, a 600m run, a long jump and vortex howler throw. Individual performances are scored using a points table and the winners are the team with the highest cumulative points score.

The ‘Big Schools’ team competition was closely contested between the top two schools who were jostling for positions after each round of events. The eventual winners were reigning champions Histon & Impington Juniors who finished ahead of runners up Steeple Morden Primary School; both teams now qualify for the County School Games Summer Festival on 29th June in St Ives. In 3rd place was Linton Heights Primary School.

In the ‘Small Schools’ competition the team from Meldreth Primary finished as clear winners with Coton, last years champions coming second. In third place was Thriplow. This sees Meldreth and Coton off to the County School Games.

There were also some great individual performances on the night with the top 3 boys being Hugo Wells from Steeple Morden coming 1^st with 246 points, followed by Max Ramsden from Thriplow with 237 points closely followed by Morgan Head from Bassingbourn with 234 points. The top 3 girls were just as close. They were Nicole Kitooke from Bar Hill Primary School with 221 points followed by Anna Bain from Histon and Impington Junior School with 205 points followed by Olivia Welham from Coton with 204 points.

Our special ‘Spirit of the Games’ award which is to support the work being done in schools to encourage children to think about the lessons that can be learned through sport and the importance of values such as respect, determination, teamwork, honesty, passion and self-belief; not only in sport but everyday life. Was awarded to the following children:

Kristen Barry from Meadow School who stopped mid race to help another runner, forfeiting her own position.

Alex Coleridge from Haslingfield for his enthusiasm in all events and his positive attitude.

The Meadow Primary school team were also all given an award for showing great determination and cheering everyone on even people they didn’t know.

The event was supported by leaders from our Leadership Academy. They came from all over South Cambs to help out with groups of leaders from Swavesey Village College, Cambourne Village College, Comberton Village College and Chesterton Community College. The leaders were fantastic and helped all 240 children get to every event, get them scored and timed. Many of the staff and parents that came to the event told us how wonderful they had been.

There were some excellent performances on the day so congratulations to all of our winners and well done to everyone who took part. As always we have to thank the amazing sports leaders who organised and scored the events for us, they did a great job and the staff and parents were full of praise for them. ”
