Schools bask in the sun at tennis competition!
The second South Cambs tennis competition of the week was held on the courts at Comberton Village College on another afternoon of glorious sunshine.
With an entry of 16 teams from 9 schools the competition was split into a separate ‘Cup’ and ‘Plate’ competition with matches played over 8 mini courts and umpired by tennis leaders from Comberton. In both competitions schools played each other in a round robin group before competing in a play-off match to determine their finishing position.
There were some closely fought matches in the group stages with some excellent tennis on display for the on looking spectators who had come out to cheer on their children and school teams. The teams of two boys and two girls from Linton Heights and Swavesey finished top of their groups to qualify for the final of the ‘Cup’ competition. In the final the boys from each school played their singles matches first and with a win a piece to each school it was the girls that were up next. Both of the girls matches were extremely close with Linton winning the first 8-7 before Swavesey levelled the match overall with a 6-5 win in the second girls game. This meant the winner would be decided on count back of points won over the four matches and it was Swavesey who fared better with 34 points to Linton’s 29. So it was Swavesey that claimed victory in an enthralling contest.
Both schools now go through to the SSP Finals where they will take on the top 2 teams from the competition held at Melbourn Village College earlier in the week. The top two teams from the finals will then qualify to represent South Cambs SSP at the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough School Games Summer Finals on Thursday 29th June in St Ives.
In the ‘Plate’ final Elsworth B took on Fen Drayton. Elsworth looked the favourites having won all three of their matches in the group stages. Fen Drayton were up for the contest though and played with great determination to win 2 of the 4 singles matches meaning there was another tie. So again the points from the four singles matches were counted up and it was Elsworth who were the clear winners claiming 35 points to Fen Drayton’s 20.
The ‘Spirit of the Games’ awards which recognise the team that has best demonstrated the sporting values of respect, determination, teamwork, honesty, passion and self-belief went to Linton Heights B team and Pendragon.
Claire McDonnell, Partnership Manager and organiser of the event said; “It was a fabulous evening of tennis with lots of competitive matches which were all played in good spirit with all of the players shaking hands at the end and thanking the umpires. It was hot in the sun but the players and leaders all did great and it was lovely to see so many parents out supporting their children. Hopefully some of these youngsters will now be inspired to go on and play more tennis and will perhaps go along to a local club.”
