It was a beautiful day for the South Cambs School Sports Partnerships Cross Country competition held at Wimpole Hall Estate on the 29th November with perfect running conditions greeting the 1000 plus runners who had come to compete for their school in this annual event.

For the first time the event involved runners from years 3 & 4 as well as the regular competition for pupils in years 5 & 6. With separate races for boys and girls a total of eight races were run over the 1600m, one lap course.

The atmosphere was buzzing as all of the runners were cheered on at the start and finish of the course by fellow pupils, staff and parents that had come to spectate! Each race was hotly contested with runners keen to achieve their personal best and do their bit for the school team in pursuit of either the Year 3/4 or Year 5/6 Team Trophy.

The top three placed runners in each school team scored for their team but individuals could also enter to compete for one of the top three medal winning positions in each race.

In the Year 5/6 team competition Linton Heights lived up to their proud running reputation and successfully defended their title as South Cambs champions with a 1st place finish in the year 5 boys and girls team competitions helping them to secure success. It was a closely run competition though with the team from Histon & Impington Juniors finishing in a strong 2nd position and Cottenham Primary not far behind in 3rd.

Our School Games Value for this event was ‘Determination’ and there were many children who showed this during the morning. At the end of the event we handed out five individual awards for to the following children who had shown real determination during the competition:

Chloe O’Sullivan and Lucy Hobbs from Histon and Impington Junior school for giving up their chance of a high finish position by stopping to help an injured team member. Zac Jolley from The Vine, Jack Year from Steeple Morden and James Wickes from Coton primary all for completing the course and giving it their personal best under challenging circumstances.

Thanks must go to the Sports Leaders from Bassingbourn Village College and Comberton Village College as well as the uniformed services group from Cambridge Regional College and the Hoohaah ladies Hannah and Alison who helped us to ensure the smooth running of the event on the day.
