Haslingfield win second SSP Yr 3/4 Tennis Competition
Haslingfield Primary School won the South Cambs School Sport Partnership Year 3/4 mini tennis competition held at Melbourn Village College outright this year after sharing the honours as joint winners in 2014.
With an entry of 18 teams into the event the competition was split into a separate Cup and Plate competition with matches played over 12 mini courts and umpired by tennis leaders from Melbourn Village College.
In both competitions schools played each other in a round robin format before qualifying through into divisions 1 through to 6 based on their results. Qualifying into Division 1 of the ‘Cup’ Competition were the teams of 2 boys and 2 girls from Haslingfield, Coton & Harston & Newton.
The team from Haslingfield proved unbeatable on the night though; overcoming Coton 3-1 and drawing 2-2 with Harston & Newton; the school they shared the title with in 2014. This meant Haslingfield claimed first place and the winner’s medals ahead of Coton Primary School who finished as overall runners up, after victory over Harston & Newton. Both teams now go through to the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Sainsbury’s School Games Summer Finals where they will represent South Cambs SSP in the event taking place in St Ives on Thursday 25th June. Before that the team from Haslingfield will take on Meridian Primary School, winners of the earlier competition held at Comberton VC, to determine the overall SSP Year 3/4 Mini Red Tennis Champions for 2015.
In the ‘Plate’ Competition for schools’ B & C teams it was the mixed teams from Guilden Morden B and Steeple Morden B & C that made it through the group stages to qualify for the top division. Steeple B lost both of their matches 3-1 which meant it all came down to the match between Steeple Morden C and Guilden Morden B and it couldn’t have been closer with both teams winning 2 singles games. This meant it all had to be decided on the number of points won and with the smallest of margins it was Steeple Morden C that came out on top and took the title of ‘Plate Winners’.
Claire McDonnell, Partnership Manager and organiser of the event said; “It was great to see so many children getting their first taste of competitive tennis, there were some really close and exciting matches that were all played in a lovely, friendly spirit.
Well done to all of the teams and children who took part and a big thank you to all of the sports leaders who did a fantastic job of scoring the games and helping the event run so smoothly.”
