Panathlon events a huge success
The South Cambs School Sports Partnership in partnership with Panathlon Challenge has run a series of sports festivals for children and young people with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) this term.
Panathlon is a national charity which gives thousands of young people with SEND the opportunity to take part in competitive sport. The pathway begins with local events, leading to county, regional and finally national finals at prestigious Olympic and Paralympic venues.
13 South Cambs primary schools have taken part in one of two Panathlon Multi Skills events with teams of 6-8 children participating in a carousel of inclusive activities including boccia blast, new age kurling, basketball, parachute popcorn, precision beanbag and skittles. At each activity schools had the opportunity to gain points for their school.
Congratulations to Steeple Morden and Bar Hill Primary Schools who managed to accumulate the highest scores, therefore being presented with the gold medals, and now going forward to represent South Cambs at the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough School Games Disability & Inclusion Festival in March.
Other primary schools taking part included Hardwick & Cambourne, Gamlingay, Elsworth Willingham Pendragon, University of Cambridge Primary, The Meadow, Milton, Histon Brook, Linton Heights & Cottenham.
11 teams from 6 secondary schools (Linton, Melbourn, Swavesey, Cambourne, Impington, Comberton) have taken part in the KS3 Panathlon Challenge Xtend competitions with pupils again taking part in teams of 6-8 and working together to score points for their team in sports such as athletics, boccia, new age kurling and table cricket. Congratulations to the teams from Impington and Comberton who won the two events and go forward to the county finals on 24th March where they will represent South Cambs and take on the best teams from Huntingdonshire, Cambridge, East Cambs & Fenland & Peterborough.
Thank you to Cambourne and Impington Village Colleges for hosting the events and a big well done to their sports leaders who did an amazing job in organising and delivering the activities and encouraging the children as they took part.
