Fourteen primary schools recently competed in the South Cambs High 5 Netball Shield Finals held at Comberton Village College. At stake was the title of South Cambs Champions 2014 and a chance to qualify for the county finals, where the top four schools on the night would go forward to represent the South Cambs district and take on the best school teams from across Cambridgeshire.

This was the last of three finals nights with Coton Primary School having previously won the A Team Plate Competition whilst Steeple Morden were victorious in the B Team Competition.

The schools were split into four pools, with each team playing all of their rivals within that group to determine whether they qualified into Division 1, 2 or 3 for the next round of matches. It was the teams from Harston & Newton, Histon & Impington Juniors, Meridian & Swavesey that won their groups and qualified into the top division.

There wasn’t much to separate the top four teams though with them all winning at least one of their matches in the final round. It was the team from Meridian Primary School that managed to claim a second victory though and this earned them enough points to take the title and claim the winners shield ahead of defending champions Histon & Impington Juniors who finished as runners up.

The top four primary school tennis teams from South Cambs came together for the first SSP finals night on Monday 9th June. The teams of two boys and two girls from Haslingfield, Meridian, Elsworth & Harston & Newton made it to the finals as the top teams from the qualification rounds played last month. All of the teams had done extremely well to make it to the finals in a competition which had a record entry of over 40 teams this year.

The finals were played in a round robin format which each team playing the other three in timed singles matches. As expected the matches were extremely competitive with a great standard of tennis on display and some really close scores.

The final round of matches were very tense with 3 teams still in with a chance of claiming the title of SSP Champions. Elsworth stepped up their play in their last match though with a 3-1 victory over Haslingfield which meant both teams finished on equal wins (5) overall. On count back of percentage of points won to points played though it was Haslingfield that finished 3rd with Elsworth 4th.

The Meridian team played some fantastic tennis in their last match against Harston & Newton and looked like they were going to win it until the last few points. A draw was enough for both teams though with Meridian finishing second with 6 wins and Harston & Newton finishing first with 8 wins and retaining their title as SSP champions. The teams from Harston & Newton & Meridian will now go forward to represent South Cambs SSP at the Cambridgeshire & Peterborough County School Games Summer Festival on 27th June in St Ives, we wish them the best of luck.

Primary schools in South Cambs have been experiencing fun filled, action packed Team Building Activity Days. Selected classes have spent the whole day learning how to work in a team, understanding the importance of team work qualities such as tolerance, determination, patience, respect, honesty, working together and self-belief.

Working in groups, children have been challenged with problem solving activities which they must work at together in order to succeed. Activities have included Charlotte’s Web, Shepherd & Sheep, Walk the Plank and Crossing the Swamp.

Feedback:

Year 6 pupil – ‘I really enjoyed Charlotte’s Web as it was an activity I had never done before. It was fun and challenging and we had to talk to each other and work as a team to get everyone through the web.’

Year 5 pupil – ‘I liked Shepherd & Sheep because we were blindfolded and could only communicate with a whistle.’

Year 3 teacher – ‘it has definitely had a positive effect on my class’s ability to relate to one another and their concept of what a team is. It was a fantastic experience for them.’

We look forward to working with more schools to bring a new challenge to their children.

The teams from Meridian & Elsworth Primary Schools were joint winners of the South Cambs School Sport Partnership Year 3/4 mini tennis competition held at Comberton Village College on 21st May with not even a point to separate the two teams.

With an entry of 18 teams the competition was split into a separate Cup and Plate competition with matches played over 12 mini courts and umpired by tennis leaders from Comberton VV and Sixth Form.

In both competitions schools played each other in a round robin format before qualifying through into divisions 1 through to 6 based on their results. Qualifying into Division 1 of the cup competition were the teams of 2 boys and 2 girls from Elsworth and both Meridian A and Meridian B. This set up some tense final matches and with Elsworth A and Meridian A both beating Meridian B 3 games to 1 it all went down to the final match between the two schools. Nothing could separate the teams though with each school winning 2 of the 4 matches and recording exactly the same number of points won!! This meant the honours were shared with both teams collecting winner’s medals and certificates.

Both teams will now go forward to the South Cambs SSP Finals on Monday 9th June where they will play against Haslngfield and Harston & Newton who were the joint winners from the competition played at Melbourn VC to determine the SSP Champions 2013-14.

In the Plate competition for schools’ B, C & D teams it was the mixed teams from Swavesey D, Elsworth B and Meridian C that made it through the group stages to qualify for the top division. This time the winner was clear cut however with Meridian C team winning both of their matches 3-1 to finish with 6 wins and ahead of Elsworth B who were runners up with 4 wins.

Claire McDonnell, Partnership Manager and organiser of the event said; “It was great to see so many children getting their first taste of competitive tennis, there were some really close and exciting matches that were all played in a lovely, friendly spirit. Well done to all of the teams and children who took part as Honours shared atwell as our winners.

Finally, I must say a special thank you to the leaders from Comberton Village College who did a fantastic job of scoring the games and helping the event run so smoothly.”
