Over one hundred children took part in the South Cambs School Sports Partnership third annual New Age Kurling competition. Due to its popularity we had to put on two competitions, one in the morning and one in the afternoon. The event was hosted at Bassingbourn Village College and organised on the day by an excellent group of sports leaders from the college.

New Age Kurling is an exciting target game with teams playing a tactical game of position with the stones. Adapted from the original curling game played on ice the sport is play indoors on a smooth flat surface, such as a sports hall, making it perfect for able bodied and disabled people of all ages. This year we added three more challenging games for the children to play, they were skittles, moving stones and between the gates. This added to the excitement for the children.

The morning competition hosted 9 schools with 64 children and the afternoon competition had 7 schools with 52 children. Teams of 2 players from each School took part in the event which was played over 8 courts. Teams played in a round robin format and took on the other schools in their group for twenty minutes on each game then moved to the next game. Players took it in turns to push their stones along the ground towards the target which was either the skittles, between the gate, a stone or the middle of the target.

Although we scored the games to allow the children to see their personal improvements our winners were those teams that showed either self-belief or passion on the day. These achievements were scored by the sports leaders on each activity. The winners of the morning competition were Swavesey A team, Jeavons Wood B team, Cottenham C team and Guilden Morden D team. The winners of the afternoon competition were Steeple Morden A team, Histon Juniors B team, Bassingbourn C team and Harston and Newton D team. Each child was presented with a drawstring bag and a certificate.

The leaders from Bassingbourn Village College excelled themselves with a huge number of nominations for leader of the event. Leaders that were nominated by the primary school staff for being exceptional were Hugo, Joe, Millie, Lucy, Lizzie, Ollie, Amy, Charlotte, Joseph and Emily but the overall winner of leader of the event was Ellie-Rose who received the most nominations. Ellie-Rose was presented with a South Cambs SSP snood.

The main attraction of this year’s South Cambs School Sports Partnership Year 3&4 and Year 5&6 Small Schools Cross Country Competitions at Milton Country Park was the mud and puddles. The rain kindly held off for the races so all the children could enjoy their cross country competition.

It was a spirit of fun and enjoyment that filled the venue as 500 school children competed for individual honours and team pride.

One of the overriding aspects was the sense of sportsmanship on display throughout the competition, with a year 5 boy helping his classmate make it across the finish line.

Another key element was the pivotal role of the year 10 sports leaders from Impington Village College and the uniformed services students from CRC.

They were there to assist in the smooth running of the competition, but they were far more than just stewards, the Impington Leaders were amazing sweep runners encouraging those finding tough to keep going as well has handing out the all-important race positions. The CRC leaders marshalled the course and ensured that no one got lost on their way round.

The top three placed runners in each school team scored for their team but individuals could also enter to compete for one of the top three medal winning positions in each race.

After the disappointment of having to postpone this annual event due to the high winds on 29th November, we saw some spectacular running at Wimpole Hall Estate on Thursday 6th December from 20 big schools from across South Cambridgeshire. Conditions couldn’t have been better for the 800+ runners that took part in the event, the temperature was perfect with just a slight breeze.

Thanks must go to the Sports Leaders and staff from Bassingbourn Village College and Comberton Village College and Hoohaah Alison. Without these amazing people we would not be able to hold such a huge and smoothly run event. Also a huge thank you to the National Trust for allowing us to use the stunning setting that is Wimpole Estate.

The atmosphere was buzzing as all of the runners were cheered on at the start and finish of the course by fellow pupils, staff and parents that had come to spectate! Each race was hotly contested with runners keen to achieve their personal best and do their bit for the school team in pursuit of either the Year 3/4 or Year 5/6 Team Trophy.

The top three placed runners in each school team scored for their team but individuals could also enter to compete for one of the top three medal winning positions in each race.

The individual results for runners in year 5 & 6 were as follows:

In the Year 5/6 team competition Swavesey stormed ahead to retain the top team position with a massive points lead over second place Cottenham who were followed by Histon and Impington Junior school who finished third.

In the Year 3/4 team competition we saw a much closer finish between Histon and Impington and Swavesey with Histon and Impington taking the top place with a point’s difference of just 7! In third place this year was Hardwick and Cambourne Community School, this is an amazing achievement given that this is their first time at our cross country event.

Smiles were in plentiful supply at Milton Country Park on Thursday morning as youngsters took part in the South Cambs School Sports Partnership Year 3&4 and Year 5&6 Small Schools Cross Country Competitions.

It was a spirit of fun and enjoyment that filled the venue as 700 school children competed for individual honours and team pride.

Grimaces were at a premium on the two-lap course which provided fellow competitors the perfect opportunity to offer support and cheer on their team-mates.

One of the overriding aspects was the sense of sportsmanship on display throughout the competition, with two boys in year 6 helping each other across the finish line.

Another key element was the pivotal role of the 16 young sports leaders from Impington Village College and 16 uniformed services students from CRC. They were there to assist in the smooth running of the competition, but they were far more than just stewards, the Impington Leaders were amazing sweep runners encouraging those finding it tough to keep going as well has handing out the all-important race positions. The CRC leaders marshalled the course and ensured that no one got lost on their way round.

The top three placed runners in each school team scored for their team but individuals could also enter to compete for one of the top three medal winning positions in each race. These are our top finishers in each race for the year 5&6 competition.

The fantastic facilities at Cambridge University Sports Ground on Wilberforce Road played host to the annual South Cambs SSP Year 5/6 Quadkids Athletics Competition and the Year 4/5/6 Small Schools Competition on 7th June with a record 32 teams competing in both events. We weren’t quite so lucky with the weather this year and the Small Schools got a little damp during their break. This year, to enable as many schools to participate as possible we ran the two competitions one after the other, the one for ‘Small Schools’ open to schools with fewer than 120 pupils in Key Stage 2 from 12:30pm-3pm and one for ‘Big Schools’ open to schools with more than 120 pupils in Key Stage 2 from 4pm – 6:30pm. Teams were not only competing for the title of ‘South Cambs Champions 2018’ but also the honour of representing the partnership at the County School Games Finals later in the month in St Ives.

Quadkids is a team based competition with 5 boys and 5 girls each competing in a 75m sprint, a 600m run, a long jump and vortex howler throw. Individual performances are scored using a points table and the winners are the team with the highest cumulative points score.

The ‘Big Schools’ team competition was closely contested with only 173 points between first and tenth teams. The eventual winners were Bassingbourn A Team who finished ahead of runners up Swavesey A Team; both teams now qualify for the County School Games Summer Festival on 28th June in St Ives. In third place was Linton Heights primary school.

In the ‘Small Schools’ competition the team from Harston and Newton Primary finished as clear winners with Coton, coming second for the second year in a row. In third place was Barrington Primary. This sees Harston and Newton and Coton off to the County School Games.

There were also some great individual performances. The top ‘Big Schools’ boys we had Finlay from Bassingbourn with 191 points in first place, Morgan from Bassingbourn coming second with 182 points and third we had a tie with three boys all having 178 points, they were Alfie from Bassingbourn, Ryan from Histon and Alex from Jeavons Wood. For the girls we had Nicole from Bar Hill with 180 points in first place, Sophie from Pendragon with 163 points second, and Anna from Histon coming third with 140 points. The top ‘Small Schools’ individual winners were, for the boys, Thomas from Harston and Newton in first place with 181 points, Elliot from Elsworth in second place with 177 and Austin from Barrington in third place with 176 and for the girls we saw Maddie from Coton in first place with 176 points, Olivia from Coton in second place with 168 points and in third place was Summer from Harston and Newton with 144 points.

Our special ‘Spirit of the Games’ award which is to support the work being done in schools to encourage children to think about the lessons that can be learned through sport and the importance of values such as respect, determination, teamwork, honesty, passion and self-belief; not only in sport but everyday life. Was awarded to the following children over the two competitions:

Emma from Bassingbourn for a positive attitude, Charlotte from Melbourn, William from Swavesey for determination, Ellis from Pendragon for determination and a positive attitude, Isabel from Steeple Morden for determination and a positive attitude, Katlin from Cottenham for giving everything 100% and with a smile, Freddie from Steeple Morden for excellent effort in everything he did, Isla from Fowlmere for self belief, Juno from Dry Drayton for determination, Hannah from Coton for being supportive to all of her group, Issac from Great Abington for Team Work and determination, Charlotte from Fen Drayton for her enthusiasm, Julius from University of Cambridge Primary School for determination and last but by no means least, Alex from Fen Drayton for passion.

The event was supported by leaders from our Leadership Academy. The ‘Small Schools’ Competition was supported by a team of 30 Swavesey Sports leaders who stayed on to the do the ‘Big Schools’ Competition later with other leaders from Cambourne Village College, Comberton Village College, Impington Village College and Melbourn Village College. The leaders were fantastic and helped all 320 children get to every event, get them scored and timed. This year we have introduced Leaders Awards where members of staff from participating schools can nominate the best leaders. This event saw Tom Newman from Swavesey VC, Alannah, McEntee from Swavesey VC getting one nomination each, Hannah Stanlay from Swavesey VC getting two nominations and Max Kellen getting an amazing four nominations, these leaders are in year 9 and this is their first event but you really wouldn’t have known.

Sports Leaders from Swavesey supported the events

Claire McDonnell, Partnership Manager said “It was a great event and fantastic for the children to get to compete at the athletics track and use such lovely facilities, I hope it will have inspired some of them to get more involved in athletics. There were some excellent performances on the day so congratulations to all of our winners and well done to everyone who took part. As always we have to thank the amazing sports leaders who organised and scored the events for us, they did a great job and the staff and parents were full of praise for them. ”

Smiles were in plentiful supply at Milton Country Park on Tuesday morning as youngsters took part in the South Cambs School Sports Partnership Year 3&4 and Year 5&6 Small Schools Cross Country Competitions.

It was a spirit of fun and enjoyment that filled the venue as more than 600 schoolchildren competed for individual honours and team pride.

Grimaces were at a premium on the two-lap course which provided fellow competitors the perfect opportunity to offer support and cheer on their team-mates.

One of the overriding aspects was the sense of sportsmanship on display throughout the competition, from the arm of support in the Year 4 girls’ race to cajole a friend on to the finish line to the ‘showmanship’ of the sprints from some of the older boys in order to put on a show for the watching masses.

Another key element was the pivotal role of the 36 young sports leaders from Impington Village College.

They were there to assist in the smooth running of the competition, but they were far more than just stewards.

The sports leaders were urging on the youngsters on each lap, while some were there to provide a different type of support, as a ‘running buddy’ for some of those that ‘hit the wall’ during their races.

We were pleased that the sun came out for the South Cambs School Sports Partnerships Cross Country competition held at Wimpole Hall Estate on the 28th November. Running conditions were a little muddy underfoot but the course held out for the 800 runners who had come to compete for their school in this annual event.

After the success of last year’s year 3 & 4 competition we decided to run it again but this year to reduce waiting time we ran the girls and boys together. The year 5 & 6 competition was run as separate races for girls and boys giving us a total of six races run over the 1600m, one lap course.

In the Year 5/6 team competition Swavesey Primary took the trophy from Linton Heights gaining the title of South Cambs champions, 1st and 3rd positions in both the year 5 boys and girls team competitions helping them to secure success. The second and third overall teams were the same as last year with Histon and Impington Juniors coming second and Cottenham Primary coming third.

The individual results for runners in year 5 & 6 were as follows:

In the Year 3/4 team competition again the top 3 placed finishers for each school counted. This year the younger children from Linton Heights ran superbly to claim the trophy for first place, closely followed by Histon and Impington in second and Swavesey in third.

Our School Games Values for this event were ‘Determination’ and ‘Self Belief’ and there were many children who showed these during the morning. This year we asked each school to nominate a child from their school that demonstrated one or both of these. At the end of the event we handed out individual awards to the following children who had shown real determination and/or self belief during the competition:

Sasha William-Movoz – Swavesey Primary

Elizabeth Cvrcek – Histon and Impington Juniors

Isla Overton – Willingham

Liam Place – Caldecote

Evie Reynolds – Fenstanton and Hilton

Lara Middleton – Hatton Park

Henry Bathmaker – Steeple Morden

Edward Pentland – Waterbeach

Amber Zazhanje – Linton Heights

Esther Morris – The Meadow

Dexter Griffin – Melbourn

Annabelle Fairley – Cottenham

Jessica Eaton – Monkfield Park

Ragavan – Bar Hill

Ruth Faulkner – Girton Glebe

Thanks must go to the Sports Leaders from Bassingbourn Village College and Comberton Village College as well as the uniformed services group from Cambridge Regional College and Hoohaah Alison and Harmony who helped us to ensure the smooth running of the event on the day. Also a huge thank you to the National Trust for allowing us to use the beautiful setting that is Wimpole Estate.

Play Leaders training has once again proved popular with schools through the first half term with 160 children being trained up to help provide fun, active lunchtimes.

The children we have delivered to so far have been enthusiastic and have shown some great leadership qualities and I know that the younger children they will be leading during a lunchtime will be having a great time. They have come up with many different activities and will be using their planning booklets to plan their sessions.

We are now offering a Play Leaders equipment bag to help them with their activities and allow them to be responsible for their own equipment. These are £250 each. Email jpashley@combertonvc.oror more info or download a flyer play leaders equipment poster 2017

We also have our regular playground crazes to support our drive to create more active lunchtimes and for you to get your pupils and whole school involved in. The craze for this half term is pogo ball bouncing!! This would be a great activity to get your Play leaders involved with leading and launching in a school assembly.
We are pleased to announce the launch of this years new County Young Coach Academy (CYCA) for Cambridgeshire and Peterborough.

The focus for this years academy has changed, in line with the Sport England Coaching plan and UK coaching we will be focusing on recruiting young activators/ coaches with a passion to increase participation. We are looking for exceptional young leaders that want to work with those that are at entry level into a sport/ activity/ multi-sport environment. These young people do not need to be coaching already but do need to be welcoming, socially active, aware of different needs of young people and understand their influence as an activator/coach.

If this sounds like you then please apply by 6th October using the application below.
